DIY(do it yourself) : before things go wrong

If you have witnessed a design experience gone wrong, you may be discouraged from doing a simple make over by yourself. If you cannot afford to pay an interior designer for their services and you need to give your home a face lift , here are some tips you can follow:
Create a colour scheme : choosing a colour scheme not only makes the job easier. It also helps forestall painting mistakes and fabrics selection issues.
Choose one light colour; e.g off white

One dark colour ; e.g coral pink
One bright colour; e.g yellow
To create your colour scheme . Neutrals like gold or silver may be added for accenting but try not to use more than five colours at a time.

Choose a theme : deciding your design theme from the beginning will help you with accents and accessorizing . Your rug or carpet, paintings, portraits , sofa style, lighting , wallpaper and other wall finishes are to portray what theme the space is to be known for , be it contemporary , traditional or eclectic .

Have a budget: Dont just begin a make over project on a random budget . Since it's a make over project , have an idea how much you want to spend and ensure you fit into every aspect of the make over process. Starting without a budget may ruin funding for important aspects of the make over .for example, using very expensive paint and eventually buying a cheap looking, shabby sofa.

Always choose quality over quantity :
A few nice pieces of good quality will make better statement than plenty of cheap looking pieces littering your space. Remember the saying : less is more .
Your choice of fabrics, carpeting , and finishes must be guided by quality which by the way can be inexpensive . Looking out for stores on sale periods, indigenously manufactured furniture , medium rated paints can save money and ultimately look fantastic in your space.

Project management : make a decision on your artisan choice, stages of the project, supervision , as well as time frame. If it's a live - in space already , then it means you have limited time and you need to be very organized. Clean up per stage should be done as often as possible. Clear up clutter to avoid paint or other material stains. Also make arrangements to cover up where necessary.
