Refreshing the home

We all know that feeling we get when we haven't been at home for a while .
Our home has been put under lock for a while and we need some spark to revive it. This is an everyday situation in some homes even as it hadn't been locked up. Damp smell, lack of natural light amongst many other things.
One of my many experiences as an interior designer was working with a couple who had a small apartment but wanted to refresh their space. They were concerned about aesthetics and all. My own concern was natural light and increased ventilation. Sometimes, the reason you hate your space is beyond your settee, rug or other accents .
What was supposed to be a basic decorating job became a full blown renovation.
We had to expand the windows, created a new ceiling so we could have added lighting appropriately and we also changed the paint to a lighter colour .
At the end of it all , only very few accents in the home were changed. Furniture remained as they were.

If you intend to refresh your home this season but you do not necessarily want to spend some money, here are some things you can try out:

Bring in fresh flowers
Because they are plants, they can sometimes help remove toxins as well as refresh our spaces. Apart from the aesthetic function of beautifying our space, the seemingly non existent fragrance they produce can take out damp and unwanted smells from the home. Get a vase and made it a duty to put fresh flowers in them weekly. You can try out heliconia , tulips, orchids or chrysanthemums. They are very easy to get around town.

Aromatherapy
Scented , candles, diffusers and other forms of aromatherapy are unmistakeable refreshing methods .

Rearrange
ReArranging your furniture might give you a refreshment feeling of some sort. Some people haven't done that in 10years!

Use some music
When was the last time you went to your archive of good music. Those expensive speakers you bought in your home are not for movies alone. Get some good music too. If you do not have them at home already, buy them. Invest in jazz, r& b or any other good music you might like.

Photograph your space
I suggest you photograph your space after doing these things. We may not begin to appreciate the look of our space until we see them in photographs. It's more like finding a balance between reality and psychology. Always works.

Good cooking
When was the last time you had the aroma from good cooking so nice it upset your neighbours. My reason for suggesting this is because I have seen homes with expensive ,full fitted kitchen  with twin door refrigerators and all they have are fast foods. Appreciating your space also involves 'living in it'.
It's beyond just sleeping and waking up or giving out your address . It's your home . Start living in it.

Have a blessed week!

  1. I've found that mixing up the lighting can do wonders for your home. I've recently ordered some new lamps from http://www.interior-deluxe.com/ and the change in the colour scheme really makes it seem totally different.
