Choosing the right sofa for your home

This critical question bumped into me during the week. This client had a small space and wanted to manage his space effectively. we needed to decide between choosing a sectional settee or a sofa.
Certain factors emerged in the process.
  • Were we to choose a large sofa bearing in mind that we had a small space but required maximum comfort?
  • Do we ignore other necessary aesthetic inputs which might be required?
  • What kind of fabric was best?
  • what about trend?

The kind of sofa you choose can make or break your living room design. Think of your sofa as a long term investment- like someone you would want to spend a lot of time with. A sofa made with fabric of high quality can last a lifetime.
The following should be considered:

  • How do want to feel when you sit on a sofa? Do you want it very soft? The type you sink into and cuddle up when necessary? or sturdy such that you can lie on while reading? whatever you prefer, these are elements of how much fibre or foam is put and where appropriate. your fabric type also plays a significant role in this.
Flat-surfaced fabrics like damask, brocade, and satin show the effects of abrasion because the long yarns on the surface are subject to wear. Pile fabrics, like frieze, plush, and velvet, withstand abrasion quite well if they are made of firm yarns with deep and close pile and firmly held to the ground cloth.
Loose woven fabrics create a sturdier look as opposed to closely woven fabrics which create a cosy feel.
  • what is the purpose of the space? Consider where the sofa is going and the purpose of the space. Is it going to be a formal living room or the kids' den. For a kids' den, light colours may not be suitable due to propensity to stain.

How much room do you have for the settee?
It isn't exactly necessary to fit a sofa according to the exact size of a space. what this means is, you don't have to put a very large sofa in a large space. A large space should have some walkway allowance, depending on what you intend to achieve. How about a sectional that brings the space together with an interesting occasional chair or a recliner in a contrasting colour to compliment the sofa?

what about trend?
Its  best to choose a sofa that can work with any impending trend or age . These days, fabrics have come really retro with couture designs that fit almost any sofa design. so I can say largely that its no longer about the design of the sofa itself but what fabric is used. Bear in mind that plain fabrics are best for sofas as large patterns appear better on occasional chairs and ottomans. If you must do a mix and match with large patterns or stripes, ensure that you have chosen a simple design and its used for detachable back rests.

ciao!!!!
