POTRAITS VS PAINTINGS
Written by bukky lepe
Paintings and pictures are sometimes used to reflect our personality. Besides its function as great accent for aesthetic uses, pictures or paintings can be a way of communication to our guests who we really are.
If a walk into a home for instance and find several painting of a nude Marilyn Monroe all over a guy's home, I need not be told too much. Lol. Types of paintings
Abstract
Usually a type of painting characterized by lines, sortounding circles or patterns . Might appear blande but are better explained by the artist.
Virtual
A virtual painting depicts formulated images. E.g the market place, women carrying babies etc.
Portrait
Usually painting of a known person, celebrity or place.
Embossed
Paintings now come in mildly sculpted or attached pieces to create a more apparent, embossed look .
Most people will on the spot decide what they want to put in their spaces but if you are overwhelmed by accents just like me, you may have a tough time deciding which you really want or how to combine both.
Paintings and portraits can be in the same space irrespective of the size of the space. What's important is how its placed and where.
In the bedroom
Use paintings rather than portraits in the bedroom. If you must use pictures at all, put in a small or medium sized frame on the dresser or bedside drawer.(4 by 6 or 5 by 7).
In the bathroom
Both paints and portraits can be used in a bathroom depending on the size. If you have wall space for it, you may hang a medium sized painting or place the portrait on the bathroom dresser or cabinet
Living area
Living rooms sure give us an array of options with paintings, portraits and more. However, one mustn't over crowd the wall space. It's no longer trendy to hang portraits or paintings all over the house. A fairly or very large painting / portrait depending on the size of the space can be used on the wall opposite the focal wall or any other place that seems appropriate while medium sized family portraits can be grouped together to give a 'put together ' look.
Staircase landing
A portrait more often than not appears great in this area of the home. Some large families often use this as a display of family history and can easily intimate guests with a little bit of details or perception of the family. For this space I would suggest you create an order in which they are arranged according to your preference. What's important is, THERE MUST BE AN ORDER.
Make this an opportunity to pick from the hundreds of pictures in your old store to create a visual biography on your walls through pictures. Or rearrange those pictures/ portraits you have all overthe walls in you house. It's not an exhibition. Even at art exhibitions, portraits or painting are hung individually on a large wall for you to appreciate them better.
