Painting happens to be one of my favourite parts of designing. i guess this is because it leaves me with the feeling of the job being half done. If you will be choosing paint colours either with a designer or a manufacturer's colour centre, here are some of the questions you may need to ask yourself. These may guide you in making the right choice independently.
what purpose will the space serve?
who is the space meant for?
How often do i intend to redecorate?
Painting a room in an inappropriate colour could bring up awry feelings and discomfort so be careful when you are to choose paints. i had a client who at a time branded his private guest house in a telecoms company colour which was sunlight yellow. He had to call for rescue when he began to have nightmares! funny it may sound but the truth is, colours atimes work with pschology which is why certain colours are suitable for specific areas only. Colours can be warm, vibrant, dull, cheerful etc. Colours can also be used to determine or affect the virtual size of a space. white for example is suitable for small spaces. This is because it usually makes a room appear larger.
you can paint a feature wall in a bright colour while other walls remain in white or any other neutral colours. when painting areas such as a child's nursery.bright, vibrant colours are used to craete a seemingly playful atmosphere. colours such as sunlight yellow, tangerines, light pink and red are interesting colours which come to play.
A teenager's room might also require bright colours but one must be sure to choose mature colours like teal, navy blue, purple, magenta, peach amongst others. Paints come in different forms. The most popular of them are the emulsion, vinyl silk, matte and textcoat.
Emulsion: very cheap, basic. can be used in most parts of the house.
vinyl silk: smooth, satin like, shiny and washable. suitable for living rooms, bedrooms and offices.
Matte: silky, dull finish, also washable. ideal for kitchens and bathrooms
Textcoat: cheap, very coarse finish. suitable for exteriors, absorbs dirts, very durable.
There are also some effects that can be done with paint though may require an expert therefore may be a little expensive:
Glitter dust: usually applied with a spraying gun. coarse, shiny, glittery. Applied over a painted wall
marbling: Applied with a foam padded tool. usually appears like marble flooring, comes in various clours
sponging: This is achieved by dabbing a sponge on a wet wall;right after painting. Effect is clearer when it is dried
Murals: usually done by an artist. you can express yourself with paints by doing this .In a child's nursery, you could have a favourite cartoon character painted on the wall.
